Vladislav Surkov: 2024 Will be the Year of Ukraine’s Disintegration

Denying reality is nothing new to him

Vladislav Surkov, a former advisor to the Russian president, published an article Twilight on the Farm in the popular online political magazine Actual Comments. Surkov is known as one of the “experts” on the Ukrainian problem, Putin’s personal advisor, and the Kremlin’s “shadow cardinal” who influenced Russian policy in Ukraine in 2014–2020. The title of his article refers to Nikolai Gogol’s story Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, a masterpiece of this genius of Russian and Ukrainian literature. Surkov’s main idea is that disintegration and degradation await Ukraine in 2024, and there will be no peace talks with Kiev.

The article is full of the usual anti-Ukrainian rhetoric and is generally quite stupid and banal. Surkov claims that the blame for all of Ukraine’s problems lies in the mythological worldview of Ukrainians, who are in a hopeless situation but still believe in a miracle.
