Ukraine’s Ex-army Chief Appointed Ambassador to UK

It doesn’t look like a political exile

General Valeriy Zaluzhny has been appointed by Volodymyr Zelensky as the new envoy to the UK. It happens a month after Zaluzhny lost the army chief role. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s President, had signed off on the diplomatic appointment.

The appointment of Valeriy Zaluzhny as ambassador to the UK emphasizes the importance of the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United Kingdom. The UK is Ukraine’s main military ally and has consistently supported Kyiv since the beginning of Putin’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. UK military assistance, surveillance data and training capabilities are critical to the Ukrainian military.

General Valeriy Zaluzhny, as a former Ukrainian commander-in-chief, is an ideal candidate to take the ambassador’s chair in London. Deeply immersed in the development of Ukrainian military strategy in the past, he can discuss defense cooperation with the UK at the highest professional level. Valeriy Zaluzhny has a masters degree in international relations, so the career of a diplomat is open for him.
