The grain harvest in Russia in 2024 was significantly lower than the previous year. The total harvest was 124.96 million tons, including 82.4 million tons of wheat. In 2023, 144.9 million tons of grain were harvested, including 98.2 million tons of wheat. The low harvest contributed significantly to food inflation, with bread prices rising in particular. Black rye bread becomes unaffordable product as the 2024 rye harvest is a record low of only 1.3 million tons. Prices will continue to rise in 2025, which means that I do not expect a good harvest this summer. Fertilizer production in Russia did increase by 9% in 2024. It is up for the second year in a row after falling 11% in the first year of the Ukrainian war (2022). So far, the increase in fertilizer production has had no impact on the results of agriculture, where many problems have accumulated, especially in the production of grain and vegetables. A significant part of vegetable production is imported. Since January 1, 2025 import duties on potatoes have been abolished in Russia. Translated from bureaucratic to ordinary language, this means that in the winter and spring months of 2025 Russia will contain food inflation at the expense of imports.
