The End of Assad Rule in Syria
The dictator fell and fled to Moscow
The Assad era has come to an end in Syria. On the night of December 7–8, Syrian opposition forces entered Damascus virtually unopposed by Bashar al-Assad loyalists. In doing so, they put an end to the power of the Assad family, which had controlled the country for almost 54 years.
Syria has become their feudal property during the Assad family’s rule, and the country’s civil war has only increased the corruption that has led to the concentration of capital in the hands of a narrow circle of individuals. Now the civil war has reached its culmination.
In recent days, the last resistance nodes of the Assad regime forces fell — the cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs. On Sunday the opposition took control of the Syrian capital Damascus, liberating political prisoners and inviting exiled Syrians to return to a “free Syria”.
Al Jazeera reports that the Syrian armed opposition also entered the city of Tartus, where a Russian military base is located.
