Given the recent elections in Slovakia, which also challenged EU integrity, an alliance between Hungary and Slovakia is almost inevitable. Moreover, there are strong historical reasons for this alliance: both countries were formerly parts of the Kingdom of Hungary, and Bratislava was its capital until the 18th century. Bratislava and Budapest are separated by 160 kilometers, politically this distance is even less. Robert Fitzo and Viktor Orban are practically the same age, have the same communist past and populist present. In addition, there has long been an informal alliance between Hungary and Austria: on migration policy, opposition to Russia economic sanctions and "non-interference" in the war in Ukraine. We are witnessing a striking revival of the idea of “Austria-Hungary” within the EU, practically in its former World War I borders.
