Former President Donald Trump was injured in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunman opened fire, injuring Trump’s right ear. One spectator was killed and two others were critically wounded.

The shots were fired from an elevated position outside the Secret Service security perimeter for the venue, three senior law enforcement sources said. The shooter is dead. The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. His motive remains under investigation.

Witnesses at the scene described the terror and chaos unleashed by the shooting, from the initial uncertainty after hearing loud popping noises to the mass evacuation of the venue. President Joe Biden called the shooting “sick” and condemned political violence. He spoke with Trump later in the day.
