5 Major Challenges for U.S. Foreign Policy in 2023

2022 was a year of radical changes in the configuration of world politics. It brought new global challenges and a myriad of possible future scenarios. Covid and the green economy, which were trending in 2021, have receded into the background, giving way to international security issues related to Putin’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine. It seems that 2023 will in many respects be a continuation of the trends that emerged in international politics in 2022.

After the American disaster in Afghanistan in the summer of 2021, the United States has for the first time a unique chance to regain its former power. For the U.S., the Afghan government’s collapse destroyed a nation-building project that all previous administrations had supported for 20 years. The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022 actualized another national project, that of the Ukrainian state. The current administration’s effectiveness in supporting its allies and confronting key global challenges in 2023 will be a major determinant of our political future.
